Your government health plan (OHIP) may cover none, or only a small part, of the cost of your medical care when you are outside of Ontario or Canada and never up front. As of Jan.01.2020. OHIP terminates its “Out Of Country” (OOC) coverage for Ontarians. The average one-night hospital stay in the U.S. could cost over $16,000 USD.
Travel insurance is to protect you against unforeseen travel misfortunes such as when you get sick or injured on your trip. It also provides optional protection for travel delay or cancellation and lost baggage.
Some credit cards also provide basic travel insurance but their coverage is often limited.
Please also note insurance company may not pay your medical claim if the Government of Canada has issued a Travel Advisory for your destination.
